Letter G Books
Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman
Go, Dog, Go! is a classic Dr. Seuss book. With silly rhyming text and cute illustrations, this is a fun one to read with preschoolers. There isn’t a clear story, but rather each page just talks about different dogs and the things they are doing throughout their day. The book ends with a bunch of dogs racing to a big dog party that takes place on top of a tree!
Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann
Goodnight Gorilla is an adorable picture book that leaves plenty of room for imagination! The zookeeper says goodnight to each of the animals, locking their cages for the night and closing down the zoo. However, unbeknownst to him, the mischievous gorilla follows behind him, letting all the animals out of their cages. I find this story to be a lot of fun for little ones because there are limited words. The pictures tell the story and kids find it fun to fill in the blanks.
The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle
Written by Eric Carle and filled with the colorful illustrations he is known for, The Grouchy Ladybug is a fun book to read with preschoolers! The grouchy ladybug doesn’t want to share the breakfast he found on a leaf and challenges another ladybug to fight for it. The other ladybug refuses and the grouchy ladybug spends the whole day looking for someone to fight. Finally, tired and still hungry, the grouchy ladybug returns to the leaf and humbly accepts the offer of food from the other ladybug. This book introduces the concept of telling time as the grouchy ladybug finds a new animal to challenge on each hour. The Grouchy Ladybug also provides a good opportunity to talk about emotions and how we handle our grouchiness.
Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang
One beautiful day, Jim the monkey wakes up and everything is wrong. Grumpy Monkey follows Jim as he insists he is not grumpy and won’t accept anyone’s suggestions for having a better day. Finally, Jim admits that he is a little grumpy. The story ends with the characters acknowledging their grumpiness and the fact that it is okay to be grumpy. Grumpy Monkey offers another great opportunity to talk about our emotions – and how even the grumpy moments will pass.
Curious George by H.A. Rey and Margret Rey
A classic storybook, Curious George tells the story of a monkey who is captured in the jungle and taken back to the city. In the city, George gets into all sorts of trouble because he is just so curious! There is a whole series of Curious George books (as well as a TV show) about all the trouble George finds himself in when he can’t control his curiosity.
Letter G Activities
Make a Monkey or Gorilla Craft
Smashed Peas and Carrots has instructions for making a simple and adorable monkey craft using paint, googly eyes, construction paper, and a paper plate. (You could also totally make this and call it a gorilla!) In addition, Punk Rock Preschool has a video tutorial on how to make a gorilla using a paper plate, googly eyes and paint. (The video is much more “gorilla-looking”.)
Decorate a G
Print the outline of the letter G on card stock and let your preschooler decorate it using paint, glitter glue, or dot art. Or keep it simple and use crayons or markers!
