Letter D Books
Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
Make Way for Ducklings is a classic storybook written in the 1940s. With beautifully drawn, black and white illustrations on every page, the story of Make Way for Ducklings is visually appealing to kids and adults alike. Mother and Father Duck look for a place to live and raise their ducklings in the city of Boston. Eventually, they find a suitable place and Mother Duck lays her eggs. Once the ducklings hatch, Father Duck sets off to explore the river and promises to meet the rest of the family at the city park in a few days. When the time comes, Mother Duck waddles through Boston with her ducklings behind her. With a little help from some policemen, the ducks arrive safely at the park just in time to meet Father Duck. A cute story of ducks navigating big city life, Make Way for Ducklings is an adorable classic that preschoolers will love.
Duck for President by Doreen Cronin
Duck for President is another story about Farmer Brown and his animals from the book, Click Clack Moo Cows That Type. Duck is tired of his jobs on the farm and wants more! First, he wants to be the farmer, but soon realizes that is a lot of work. Duck keeps reaching higher, always thinking someone else has the easy job. Finally, he becomes the President of the United States! Then Duck realizes that all he really wants is to be a duck on a farm. This silly story is a great illustration of how the grass is always greener on the other side.
If You Give a Dog a Donut by Laura Numeroff
If You Give a Dog a Donut is part of the If You Give series, which includes the classic If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Dog wants a donut and that turns into him asking for apple juice, then going apple picking because the apple juice is all gone….one thing reminds him of another and the story goes on from there! The illustrations in this book are sweet and colorful and text on each page is short. The repetitive style of the If You Give series allows kids to anticipate the story and follow along. If You Give a Dog a Donut is silly and can be a lot of fun!
Letter D Activities
Make a Duck Craft
Talk about Make Way for Ducklings and make a duck craft together! There are tons of adorable craft ideas out there. Some I love are making a handprint duck, making a paper duck by cutting and folding colored paper, or using cupcake liners to create a little duckling. You can also use this template from All About Reading to make a “D duck.” This can be an fun reminder of the letter D and its sound.
Enjoy Donuts Together
Enjoy a snack of donuts and apple juice together – just like the dog from If You Give a Dog a Donut! If you want to take this to the next level, you can make your own donuts. Lil Luna has a great recipe using biscuits that is super easy!
Decorate a D
Print the outline of the letter D on card stock and let your preschooler decorate it! You can keep this simple and just color the letter with crayons or markers or get more creative by using paint, glitter glue, or dot art.
